These mouthwatering Sloppy Joes are quick, easy, and inexpensive to make. A hearty, messy, and meaty American classic sandwich guaranteed to satisfy anyone at the supper table.
I will never forget the last time David and I bought a can of Sloppy Joe sauce. We browned the hamburger, added it to the sauce, and sat down to take a bite. They weren’t as good as we remembered. This was one of the things that made us realize that once you are clean eaters you can never go back…
If you think the canned Sloppy Joe stuff is good, you really need to try this recipe. It is so much better than what comes out of a can and they’re so easy to make.
Let me show you how. Let’s make Sloppy Joes!
What Are Sloppy Joes?
A Sloppy Joe is a loose meat ground beef sandwich served on a bun with a tomato-based bell pepper sauce with rich molasses for sweetness and savory tang from mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
Sloppy Joe’s is a famous bar that was frequented by Ernest Hemingway in Key West, Florida. So let’s not get the two confused.
How To Make Sloppy Joes
In a large nonstick pot or pan brown the hamburger over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat into bite-size chunks as it cooks.
Pour the cooked meat into a sieve and allow to drain; discard drippings and set the meat aside.
Add the onion, garlic, and red pepper into the same pot or pan used to cook the meat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Next, stir in the rest of the ingredients, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serve warm scooped on top of toasted buns with potato chips or French fries.
Is This Recipe Too Spicy?
If you do not like spicy food, you can omit the jalapenos and juice. This will give you a much milder Sloppy Joe.
We hope you’ll try this homemade recipe. You’ll never buy the canned stuff again!
