The holiday season is in full swing!! You are probably planning your holiday get-togethers and you may be looking for recipes to share with friends and family this season. I started thinking about the cranberry barbecue sauce I shared with you before Thanksgiving. So I thought I would recommend this horseradish white barbecue sauce to use at your holiday gatherings too.
You can drizzle, slather or mop this sauce on anything you want to put it on. And, it is amazing for dipping. The versatility of this horseradish white barbecue makes it perfect for potlucks, parties, and gatherings.
I first made this horseradish white barbecue sauce this summer when David and I made Grilled Spatchcocked Chicken. (Perhaps you remember it?) This recipe comes from Weber’s New Real Grilling cookbook. The sauce is actually an Alabama white barbecue sauce.
As the name implies, Alabama White barbecue sauce originates in none other than the state Alabama. However, the cookbook does not call it out as being an Alabama white barbecue sauce, only as a white barbecue sauce.
Regardless of where the sauce comes from, white barbecue sauce isn’t like your traditional tomato based barbecue sauce. Instead, white barbecue sauce always begins with a mayonnaise and vinegar base that may vary to some degree. Variations of other ingredients are made to boost the flavor, such as lemon juice, types of mustard, horseradish, as well the seasoning of herbs and spices.
This horseradish white barbecue sauce is similar to the White BBQ Sauce we put on the Grilled Cajun Chicken Wings. As in traditional Alabama white barbecue sauces, mayonnaise and vinegar are the base for both these sauces, but my contribution to the Alabama white barbecue sauce is heat. The sweet zesty tang of white barbecue sauce is offset with a nice warm spicy finish, which comes from extra horseradish. I kicked the sauce up even more with a good splashing of hot sauce to make it spicier. This barbecue sauce has a delicious balance of sweet tangy heat.
A note about the hot sauce: If you are not a fan of spicy food, you can leave it out or make two versions one that is mild and one that’s spicy for the spice lovers in your life. I like to use Cholula because it has a robust flavor without the lingering heat that some sauces tend to have. I highly recommend trying this sauce for its mild heat and flavor…
No, Cholula didn’t pay me to say that, it’s my honest opinion.
I could drizzle this horseradish white barbecue sauce on everything and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING!
It’s perfect to use as a baste on just about everything, from grilled chicken, pork, to fish. Use this sauce to top sandwiches or even as a dipping sauce for chicken wings or nuggets for holiday parties. Not to mention with all that horseradish this sauce is amazing on beef.
Can you say or prime rib, boys, and girls? Yum!
Not only is it delicious, but this horseradish white barbecue sauce is stupid easy to make! Just whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl, pour the sauce into a jar with a lid and refrigerate until you are ready to serve. The sauce will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, so save time and make it ahead!
We hope this barbecue sauce makes it to your holiday party this year.
What will you put this on? I’m thinking beef brisket… Comment below!
