A few weeks ago, I was approached by UncommonGoods to do a product review of their gifts for men. Up until then, I was not familiar with the company. They were nice enough to provide me with information to learn more about the company. Here’s a little about what I learned:

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, UncommonGoods is a privately owned retailer. They feature unique gifts created in harmony with the environment without harm to animals or people. Most of the products they offer are made here in the US. Approximately one-third are made using recycled and/or upcycled materials. About half of their products are handmade.

As an independently owned business, UncommonGoods support causes they believe in and impact the world in a positive way. With every purchase you make, they donate $1 to the nonprofit of your choice. Since they started the Better to Give program 12 years ago, they have donated over $million to charities around the world!

UncommonGoods offers a lot of really cool and unique products for men, especially those that may be hard to shop for. (Click HERE to check them out). I asked David to assist in this review since we were reviewing products for men. I guess hindsight is 20/20 because our anniversary was last week and if I had been thinking I could have selected an anniversary gift for him! (Click HERE to see anniversary gifts for men). I mean they have something for everybody; even gifts for that certain “geek” in your life (Click HERE to see those).

Together, David and I chose reclaimed Fire Hose Log Carrier. This gift is really cool! Not only could we trash the tacky and oh so floppy hand-cut reusable grocery bag away, but we have a really nice tote for our firewood. The carrier is made from former hoses responsible for extinguishing fires. Micah Landworth discovered the material at a fire station in his local Oakland, California. After the fire hose was retired, the station donated to the Oakland Zoo for orangutan swings, but the remnants went to the landfill. Micah stepped in and repurposed the material into a clever carrier that makes the most of its practically indestructible nature.

Handmade in Oakland, California. (Check it out HERE)

The log carriers are made to order, and our gift arrived a lot sooner than expected. The timing was perfect. It’s that time of year when we clean out the fireplace and take any unused wood off the porch back over to the woodpile and make room for our porch furniture. This year, David really did a nice job of predicting the amount of wood we would need for burning and we only ended up with a handful of pieces to take back over to the stack. He was able to test out our new log carrier.

The log carrier lays flat to load the wood and it is able to hold a lot of it. Its sturdy construction with handles makes it easy to carry. Best of all it is part of a genuine fire hose salvaged from a U.S. Fire Department. You almost wish the piece of hose could tell you about all the fires it was able to put out and about the brave firemen that helped move it around.

When I started this blog, I always said I would not represent anything that I didn’t believe in. I believe in the good of the gifts that UncommonGoods offer. We are thrilled with our new log carrier and can’t wait to use it next winter.

The next time you get stumped trying to figure out a gift to give that special man in your life, visit UncommonGoods they have great gifts for men.
