Take your favorite snack foods to a whole new level by smoking them! Yes, that’s right today we are talking about smoked snack mix.

Spivey’s Spicy Smoked Snack Mix combines Crispix cereal Cheez-Its, pretzels, and peanuts. The snack mix is tossed in spicy butter sauce and kissed with applewood smoke. This snack mix is a surefire crowd-pleaser (pun intended). It’s the perfect snack mix for game days, birthday parties, and get-togethers.

Crispix, Cheez-Its, Pretels and peanuts

The Big Game is coming up this Sunday, and whether or not you watch football, chances are you’ll be watching the commercials or eating yummy snack food at a party somewhere. So we thought now would be the perfect time to share some new delicious super bowl recipes with you.

Do you remember Doo Dads? David and I both loved that snack mix, but it was discontinued some number of years ago. We’ve talked about that snack mix ever since. However, this snack mix made us forget about our beloved Doo Dads. This snack mix is a little spicier than the traditional Doo Dads, and that kiss of applewood smoke is really hard to beat!

How To Make Spivey’s Spicy Smoked Snack Mix

Set up the grill or smoker for indirect heat using the three-zone split fire charcoal setup. Preheat to 250 degrees F and add some apple wood to the hot coals.

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a small saucepan with the Worcestershire sauce, season salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well and turn off the heat.

Add the cereal, nuts, cracker, and pretzels to a large bowl. Pour the melted butter mixture over the snack mix. Toss to combine. Coat well.

Notes: It’s hard to measure out cups of crackers and pretzels. Just measure the cereal and peanuts as best as you can and then eyeball the number of crackers and pretzels. You want a nice equal ratio of ingredients. Not too much of one.

I found that using my hands was the best way to coat the snack mix. I wore rubber gloves to make cleanup easy.

pan of snack mix on the grill

Pour the snack mix out onto the disposable pan, spreading it out in an even layer across the sheet.

Place the sheet pan of snack mix over the center (non-heated) portion of the grill or smoker.

David stirring the snack mix

Smoke for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Any longer on the smoke will make it a little overwhelming. 60 minutes is the perfect kiss of smoke.

After an hour, remove the pan from the grill or smoker. Allow the snack mix to cool and enjoy!

One thing we did to cut down on unnecessary expenses was to use Crispix Cereal. Otherwise, you would have to buy three boxes of Chex Cereal (Rice, Wheat, and Corn Chex). Crispix has both a crispy rice and crunch corn side, and there is enough in the box for a couple of batches of this snack mix. Besides, we didn’t want to end up with 3 boxes of unused cereal in the pantry.

No Grill? No Problem!

Alternatively, if you don’t have the equipment to smoke the snack mix, use 1 teaspoon of Smoked Paprika and bake in the oven at 250 degrees F for 1 hour, tossing every 15 minutes.

Whether they know it or not, we have generated a panel of taste testers using our neighbors, friends, and coworkers to taste our newest recipes. We found that the snack mix will disappear fast. Someone even told David he should sell it!

So, you may want to double-batch this recipe, or you may miss the opportunity to pop some in your mouth for yourself!

Enjoy the snack mix and the game (or commercials)!

Great mix Debbie – I will make in my oven as my grill is not very accessible with 8 inches of snow around it!

We have friends who make “close to this” recipe, and we love it, but I know I’ll like this one more because you added smoke and the grill, and I’m into grilling and smoking stuff. I have two gas grills, a pellet grill and a big (mounted on a trailer) Oklahoma Joe smoker. I had a Weber round charcoal grill also, but I just don’t have the room for everything, so gave that one to my daughter who wanted it..

Since I grow many varieties of hot and mild peppers sometimes drying them or making hot sauces with many flavors, I can see this would be another place to tweak the flavors and heat as well. Maybe ghost or habanero or Carolina Reaper, or a milder one.

Hi Bruce! An awesome idea about adjusting the flavors with your own peppers. Make sure you cut back on the cayenne pepper if you do. This is spicy as is! Thanks for the review!
