Today I’m sharing our August Mountain Moments. When I started this blog in 2013, it was a form of diary to document what we did and most importantly what we ate. Sometimes I get so caught up in sharing our delicious food, I forget about all the stuff in between. So this month I’d like to start sharing a little recap of what happened the previous month in and outside of our mountain kitchen. #MountainLife
August wasn’t quite as busy as July, but we made some great memories! Here’s a small preview of what’s been going on…
Seth’s Visit Before Starting College
Our grandson Seth came to spend a week with us last month. David took the week off with him so they could do the stuff grandpas and grandsons do, like going fishing, riding go-carts, browsing in sporting good stores and lots of grilling and eating! It was a fun-filled week, to say the least.
We really missed having Seth last year. Unfortunately, it did not work out for him to come up and visit. So this year needed to be extra special. I like to make desserts when he comes up and I usually make zucchini bread. This time I wanted to do something different. I had David text him before he came to find out what his favorite dessert was. Seth said his favorite dessert was cheesecake. So that is what I made!
Now he has started college. We are so proud of him!

Sarah McLachlan In Concert
As you know, David and I are rockers at heart, but we love all types of music. In August we went to Wolf Trap, in Vienna, Virginia, for the first time to see Sarah McLachlan perform. If you are not familiar with Sarah McLachlan, she is a Canadian singer and songwriter known for her emotional ballads such as “Angel” (see an amazing performance HERE), “I Will Remember You” and countless others.
Sarah has the most amazing voice I have ever heard. Lyrically she can take me on a trip back in time. Her music got me through some of the toughest times of my life and to see her live made me an emotional wreck. It was the first concert that ever really brought me to tears.
Sarah is an amazing talent and I’m so glad David and I got a chance to see her perform. If she ever comes near where you live, GO SEE HER! You will not be disappointed.
August 6-Month Skin Check
I went to the new Schar Cancer Center in August for my skin check. My group of melanoma and skin cancer doctors has moved into the new facility. It’s very large and very nice, but it makes me so sad to know this place is needed so desperately. Cancer sucks.
It has been a full six months since my last skin check. The longest I have gone between skin checks. Everything checked out good. I also have something exciting to share about my visit, but I need to get my doctors permission before I can share it with you. As soon as I get the green light I will let you know!
I cannot stress enough to you how very important skin checks are to your health. Before you come up with an excuse not to call and schedule an appointment, I didn’t think I would get Melanoma either, but I did.
Have you scheduled a skin check? If you have, good. If you haven’t, get on the phone! [READ MORE HERE]

– Alexandra (Comment & 5-Star rating on David’s Blackberry Crisp With Farm Fresh Blackberries)
At this time we are in Sweden and went out to pick blackberries (not the easiest sport 😀)
We found your recipe and followed all the steps except the nuts (didn’t have any)
To make a long story short…we can’t stop eating it😂”
“The wings turn out fantastic Every time I make them on the kettle grill!! I use lump charcoal and apple wood for extra flavor. I appreciate that the brine really doesn’t mask the smokey meat flavor but does add just a bit of something that compliments the smoke very well. Thanks for the recipe!!”

“Boy, this looks good. I like your meatless Mondays…what a great reminder of how many wonderful ways there are to cook main dishes without meat! I love when spinach is in a main dish, it makes it seem healthier with the added green! Thank you for sharing your recipe!.”
