Leftover French bread? Try this delicious French bread egg in a basket recipe! The leftover French bread is toasted with a creamy fried egg with runny yolk cooked in the center, with melted cheese and crumbled bacon.

David introduced me to Eggs In a Basket not long after we met. One night for supper. It’s such a neat little trick for making toast a fried egg inside.

Let me show you how to turn leftover French bread into a quick and easy breakfast!

bacon, eggs and bread

How To Make French Bread Egg In A Basket

First, slice the French Bread into 1-inch slices.

Using a knife or your fingers, create holes in the middle of each slice of French bread.

It doesn’t have to look pretty, the egg will fill in the hole. Toss the removed portions of the bread into the pan and cook it in the butter with the slices.

Melt butter in a non-stick skillet. Use the bread, move the butter around in the pan to help spread it out evenly, before placing the French bread slice into the skillet.

Carefully crack one egg into each of the holes in the bread.

Cover the pan with a lid. This will help speed up the cooking process of the egg.

When the bottom of the egg becomes opaque and white, carefully flip the bread, being careful not to spill out the egg. This is a quick even flip without any hesitation.

Top the bread and egg with a slice of cheese.

Cover and cook for another minute or until you have reached the desired consistency in which you like your egg cooked.

Chop up some bacon and crumble on top of the French bread eggs in a basket (optional).

I will definitely do this again, the next time we have leftover French Bread!

Looks quite tasty. I would do that happily.

Ah, you’re back on the deck! I have a disturbing case of deck envy with you guys. You should not ever grow tired of that view. Man!

No we will never tire of the view! The food photographs better on the deck, however, it was about 25° when I took this picture… not ideal for deck sitting yet. This winter has been harsh!! Soon, I hope. Soon… 😉
