You can protect your wooden bowls with a single application of mineral oil.
Several weeks ago, I blogged about using mineral oil to protect your cutting board. There are many other uses of mineral oil and one of them is to protect your wooden bowls from drying out.
Last weekend, my mama gave me her old wooden salad bowl set. Little did she know, I have been wanting some for a long time, but didn’t want to pay the money for a good set. She no longer wanted hers and I couldn’t believe she wanted to get rid of them.
The picture above is what the wood looked like when I got the bowls. The bowls are genuine Teak Wood, made in Thailand. The wood was extremely dry, but still in very good shape. Can you believe that all of the wooden bowls still had the “Genuine Teak Wood/Made in Thailand” gold stickers on the bottom of each one? They had hardly been used.
With just one application of mineral oil, the wooden bowls already looked brand new!
If you have a set of wooden bowls that you think are a lost cause to restore, think again! With a little love and a bottle of mineral oil they can look brand new again.
I can’t wait to use them next weekend when I make salad to go with the steaks David is going to grill!!

Great idea! I have been avoiding wooden salad bowls for just that reason – the dried out look. But now there is the lovely solution. 🙂

It really brings them back and the mineral oil is safe for food consumption. Just allow them to sit for a day or so to soak in. Dry then excess off with a clean towel.

Great tip Debbie! I do this to my wooden cutting boards routinely. I let it set for 15 minutes and then wipe it off. It keeps them sealed so not everything tastes like garlic!

Thanks, Julie. Also makes for pretty blog pictures too! 🙂

If they are dry give them a mineral oil treatment and they will be good as new, Cheryl!

It is pretty amazing what it can do. A little bit goes a long ways too! 🙂
