Today I’m sharing our June Mountain Moments. This is a recap of what happened in the month of June, in and outside, of our mountain kitchen.
SOME NORMALCY
Well, this month marks the first time we have had the opportunity to eat at a restaurant since Mid-March. It was nice to have someone cook and clean up afterward for a change.
We have also been able to hit some of our favorite wineries again. There aren’t any tastings yet, and some things are just weird, but it’s something to go enjoy when we want to.
It’s funny, I find that David and I are quite content here on the mountain cooking for ourselves. We spend a lot of time outside on the deck and porch and David could not be happier about all the grilling we have been doing.
Our neighbor and Guinea Pig even got him a new hat… Ain’t he cute??
A NEW WINE BARREL
Speaking of our porch, we were able to get another wine barrel this month from Quievremont Vineyard & Winery. Quievremont is a local winery located in Washington, Virginia.
They made a post on their Instagram account and within a matter of minutes, we had a barrel reserved in our name. This is our second wine barrel. The other one came from Fox Meadow Winery is inside in our great room. We have been wanting another one for our porch and we are so happy with the way it looks!
A VISIT FROM SETH
Our grandson Seth came to stay with us for a week at the beginning of the month. I tell you I don’t know which one of these two men were happier. We did a lot of cooking and eating and David and Seth spent most of the week doing “guy stuff”, including fishing on the Shenandoah River.
The fish didn’t bite well, but the memories made will last a lifetime.
CHECK OUT OUR FIRST OFFICIAL YOUTUBE VIDEO!!
When it comes to shooting and posting a video for the blog I’ve really been dragging my feet! Since I have a full-time job outside of The Mountain Kitchen it is very difficult to find the time to dive into it. Equipment is another factor that weighs heavily on whether or not to produce the video.
Screw it! I’ve decided it’s the time to dive in headfirst. I feel like we can offer you so much more especially when it comes to a demonstration.

“I tried this recipe last weekend and loved it. I’ve been smoking ribs, brisket, chicken, pork butt primarily for the last 5 years but never tried chuck in the smoker until now. Made some delicious sandwiches the next day for lunch. Thank you!”

‘TIS THE SEASON
Corn Zucchini Orzo Salad
Summer is bursting with flavor in this corn zucchini orzo salad. Seasonal vegetables combined with lemony orzo and feta cheese for a quick pasta salad. Yum!
David’s Big Twin Double Cheeseburger
David’s copycat recipe of Hardee’s Big Twin Double Cheeseburger. Grilled beef patties nestled on a sesame seed bun with cheese, special sauce and lettuce.
AROUND THE MOUNTAIN!
We had some repair work done to our deck at the beginning of the month. Due to some shoddy workmanship by the contractor that built our new deck and porch, there was some settling with a couple of poles. We had the deck leveled and a new piece of trim beside our screened door. The deck is back to normal and the new piece of trim will look great once it is caulked and stained to match the house.
